Eternal Ice Caves, World´s Oldest Salt Mine, and Hallstadt

This is how the salt miners slid down from shaft to shaft.

This pic was taken from the cable car heading up to the salt mine at Hallstadt.

View inside the settlement.

This is one of the oldest settlements in Europe. It dates back 4500 years. I think it is called Hallstadt.

We walked through a village with a beautiful stream.

After leaving the ice caves we missed the bus and had to walk down the mountain...

Inside the ice cave. It is very cold inside - below freezing of course.

Just exited the ice cave.

The view from on high...

Staring off into the Alps...

Going Up!

Today we rode one of the steepest train rides in Europe. The train went up at about 45 degrees to a 1700 foot peak. There are some peaks over 3000 feet, but this was high enough!!!

The view going up...

Affolter´s and kids at the top.

Home in Austria

This is a pic of Roja Affolter´s family home. We are staying with Fritz, Roja, their children, and Roja´s parents. It is a beautiful 140 year old home at the foot of the Austrian Alps.
